NORTHERN REGIONAL MINISTER LEADS TREE PLANTING TO COMMEMORATE 2022 GREEN GHANA DAY

The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Shani Alhassan Shaibu and the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon.George Mireku Duker led the planting of trees in Northern Region to mark Green Ghana Day, on Friday, 10 June, 2022
The Green Ghana Project was initiated by the government of Ghana under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in collaboration with the Forestry Commission to deal with climate change and its concomitant effect on global warming.
In line with this, the government of Ghana has provided 20 million Tree seedlings to plant across the country, for which Northern Region is set to plant 1million trees across the region.
Hon. Shaibu in his address stated that “trees give off oxygen that we need to breathe. Trees reduce the amount of stormwater runoff, which reduces erosion and pollution in our waterways and may reduce the effects of flooding. Many species of wildlife depend on trees for their habitat. Trees provide food, protection, and homes for many birds and mammals. Hence, the last man dies when the last tree dies”.
He noted that areas which were forests years ago are now virtually bare of any tree cover.
He appealed to the people of the North to embrace the Green Ghana project and desist from indiscriminate felling of trees, bush fires, and bad farming practices that have persisted over the years, resulting in the heavy loss of our vegetative cover and trees.
Hon. George Mireku Duker, expresses gratitude to the Regional Minister, and the people of the northern region especially the children for coming out with a high level of enthusiasm to ensure the project of Green Ghana succeeds.
He revealed that last year Five Million trees were planted across the country, and research undertaken by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources indicates that 85% of the trees survived.
He urged everyone to plant at least two trees to recover what has been lost and must also nurture them to ensure they survive.
