The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Shani Alhassan Shaibu received the United States Ambassador to United Nations, Her Excellency, Linda Thomas Green-Field during her Four-day tour in Africa on Saturday,6 August,2022.
Her visit to the Regional Minister, was to among other things, discuss the impact of COVID-19, the Ukraine/Russian war, and priority areas of development in the Northern Region.
Hon. Shani on behalf of the Chiefs and the people of the Region expressed his gratitude to the Ambassador for her visit and harnessed the opportunity to state the economic challenges facing the region.
He said farming remains the main economic activity in the Region but has witnessed a decline in productivity due to the increase in fuel prices, cost of farm implements, and fertilizers. This, he said, has made it difficult for farmers to access fertilizers and implements to farm in large quantities.
He also lamented the issues bothering education in the region, stating that, lack of adequate educational facilities in the region such as infrastructure, furniture, and learning materials is resulting in poor academic performance of children in the region.
The Chief Director/RCD, Alhaji Alhassan Issahaku also commended the UN for the WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) Programme, adding that, it has supported most communities in Northern Ghana to access water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.
According to him, the UN’s efforts in ensuring sustainable economy and social development, peace, and food security are much appreciated by the people of the region.
Her Excellency Ambassador Green-Field assured the Northern Regional Minister and the Chief Director of communicating their concerns to the headquarters for attention.
