The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Shani Alhassan Shaibu at a one-day record management training workshop in Tamale, entreated all public institutions to uphold the principles of records management and utilize the Records Management Units effectively.
The workshop, which was organised by the Office of the Head of the Local Government Service (OHLGS), in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), brought together top management of the Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDCAs) in Northern, Upper East, and Upper West Regions to sensitize them on the Records Management Manual (RMM).
Leading to the sensitization, the OHLGS in collaboration with the JICA engaged a Consultant to support the OHLGS to develop a Records Management Manual (RMM) and Fixed Assets Management Tool (FAMT) for the Local Government Service.
Hon. Shani Alhassan Shaibu, commended the OHLGS and JICA for developing such a laudable idea of developing a Records Management Manual and the Fixed Asset Management Tool to assist in the coordination of the operations of the Local Government Service, particularly in the proper management of records and fixed assets tracking in a synchronized manner across the country.
“It is important to note that the success of local government units particularly MMDAs is not complete without an effective Records Management system. For the purpose of this address, permit me to provide a working definition of effective Records Management: the concept simply denotes the efficient and systematic control of the creation, receipt, maintenance, use, and disposition of records”, he stated.
He added that maintaining accurate records is a crucial component of successful governance as it aids in the accomplishment of transparency and accountability in public administration and ensures effective and efficient records management.
According to him, luck of attention in record management can spell doom for organisations since sensitive information may find its way into wrong hands.
He entreated all to support public institutions to uphold the principles of records management and utilize the Records Management Units effectively.
