The Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC) recently inked a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences (JxAAS) to bolster agricultural initiatives in the Northern Region.
The agreement, focused on Crop Germplasm Research Collaboration, aims to enhance food security through joint investigations, introduction, and research activities on crop germplasm resources.
Chief Director/RCD, Alhaji Alhassan Issahaku, representing NRCC, sealed the MoU with Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, highlighting the shared objective of uplifting agricultural practices in the region.
The collaboration is an expansion of an existing partnership between Savannah Agricultural Research Institute (SARI) of the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and JxAAS, emphasizing knowledge exchange in agricultural technology.
At a Collaborative Agreement Meeting on Tuesday, 21 November, 2023, Alhaji Issahaku expressed gratitude for JxAAS’s support and outlined the history of their collaboration, citing past agreements that have resulted in practical advancements, including the introduction of 5 resilient rice varieties, namely; Hanguo, Waiqi, 923, 926 and 929. Out of these two potential varieties; 929-CSIR (Malimali, which means tasty rice in Dagbani) and Waiki-CSIR-Savanna, which performs well in the Savanna ecologies were identified and recommended
Additionally, educational opportunities for both students and staff have emerged through this partnership, with NRCC staff benefitting from training in China.
The signing ceremony witnessed representatives from both parties formalizing the agreement. Alhaji Alhassan Issahaku signed on behalf of NRCC, Mr. Sun Huoxi signed for JxAAS, and Deputy director of CSIR-SARI, Dr. Issah Sugri, represented the research institute. Mr. Sun Huoxi conveyed JxAAS’s commitment to supporting the Northern Region and Ghana’s agricultural growth, affirming ongoing assistance for increased food production.
The Chinese delegation from Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences comprised notable figures including Mr. Sun Huoxi (Vice President/Professor) and Mrs. Chen Ping (Director/Associate Professor), among others. The Ghanaian delegation included key officials like the Chief Director/RCD, Alhaji Alhassan Issahaku, Deputy director of CSIR-SARI, Dr. Issah Sugri , Alex Yeboah, Rice Breeder, CSIR-SARI and the Northern Regional Director of Agriculture, Musah Hawa, highlighting the significance and high-level representation of the collaborative effort.
