Shani Alhassan Shaibu, speaking at the National Farmers’ Day Celebration held in Kunyavila, a suburb of Tamale in the Northern Region, lauded the tireless efforts of farmers and fishermen, recognizing their pivotal role in providing sustenance for Northern communities and the nation.
Highlighting the government’s commitment, Hon. Shaibu emphasized the success of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) initiative since its inception in 2017. Notable achievements include increased fertilizer and improved seed utilization, adoption of enhanced agronomic practices, and heightened productivity within the agricultural sector.
Shaibu revealed that the Northern Region alone received significant support through the distribution of over 224,000 metric tons of fertilizers and 23,000 metric tons of seeds. Additionally, 461,584 farmers, comprising 396,620 males and 64,964 females, benefited from PFJ between 2017 and 2022.
The Minister announced the introduction of PFJ 2.0, a five-year master plan aimed at transforming Ghana’s agriculture. This new phase prioritizes a value chain-driven, private sector-focused, market-driven, and inclusive approach, replacing input subsidy programs with input credit interventions to expedite agricultural development.
Encouraging active participation in agriculture, Shaibu emphasized the government’s efforts to create an enabling environment for the youth, women, and people with disabilities to view farming as a sustainable income source.
Moreover, in commemoration of Farmer’s Day, Kanjal Tibithe from Yendi was honored as the Best Regional Farmer in the Northern region. Recognizing his efforts, Tibithe received a tricycle, mist blower, cutlasses, OFA liquid fertilizer, and a certificate.
The celebration also recognized outstanding individuals in various categories including innovation, livestock farming, crop farming, extension services, youth participation, and support for physically challenged individuals within the agricultural sector.
