The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Shani Alhassan Shaibu, spearheaded a tree planting initiative in the Northern Region on Friday, June 7, 2024, to mark Green Ghana Day.
The Green Ghana Project, a government-led initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Forestry Commission, aims to combat climate change and its associated impacts on global warming.
With the government providing 10 million tree seedlings nationwide, the Northern Region has been tasked with planting 500,000 trees across its territory.
At the Tamale Technical University, the Northern Regional Minister, alongside representatives from the Forestry Commission, Chiefs, Security Agencies, Local Government Authorities, Civil Society Organizations, the Vice Chancellor of TaTU, and students, participated in the tree planting exercise.
Addressing the gathering, Hon. Shaibu emphasized the crucial role of trees in sustaining life, highlighting their contribution to oxygen production, erosion control, habitat provision for wildlife, and overall environmental balance.
Acknowledging the positive impact of the Green Ghana Project on the region’s environment, the Minister commended the collective efforts of various stakeholders, urging continued commitment to tree planting and responsible environmental practices.
The Overlord of the Dagbon, Ndan Ya-Na Abukari II, also joined the initiative in Yendi, reaffirming his commitment to environmental conservation and calling upon chiefs and residents of Dagbon to actively engage in tree planting activities.
Mr. Kwasi Frimpong, the Northern Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, outlined plans to distribute 500,000 tree seedlings across key centers such as Tamale and Yendi, emphasizing the long-term importance of tree planting for human survival and ecosystem health.
He urged the public to actively participate in tree planting and nurturing efforts to ensure the growth and maturity of trees, thereby maximizing their environmental benefits.
