The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Shani Alhassan Shaibu, hosted the second Speaker’s Seminal Lecture at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale on Saturday, August 31, 2024.
The event, held under the auspices of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, serves as a platform for dialogue on critical national issues, with this yearโ€™s theme focusing on the role of stakeholders in ensuring a free, fair, credible, and peaceful election in 2024.
The lecture, titled “Working Together, Building Trust for a Free, Fair, Credible, and Peaceful Election 2024: The Role of Stakeholders,” highlighted the importance of unity and trust among political parties, civil society organizations, the media, security agencies, and citizens in upholding democratic values. Keynote speeches were delivered by Prof. Kwesi Aning, a renowned expert in security and governance, and Mr. Kofi Bentil, a legal practitioner and Vice President of Imani Africa.
Hon. Shaibu, in his address, urged Ghanaians to prioritize the collective good over individual or political interests, emphasizing the need to protect the peace and security of the nation. “The peace and security of Ghana must be protected at all costs to give full meaning to our national anthem,” he stated, calling for rigorous sensitization and education efforts to promote peace and discourage violence.
He also assured that the Northern Region remains peaceful and that the perception of the area as a conflict zone should be disregarded. He highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Northern Regional Security Council, the Regional Peace Council, and traditional and religious leaders in maintaining and consolidating peace ahead of the upcoming elections.
Speaker Bagbin, in his speech, underscored the significance of the lecture series, noting that it aims to alert the nation to the dangers it faces and to mobilize collective efforts to safeguard Ghanaโ€™s democratic values. He called on leaders to lead with integrity, the media to report with fairness, and citizens to vote wisely in the 2024 elections.
The event was well-attended, drawing chiefs, Members of Parliament, civil society organizations, security agencies, political parties, students, lecturers, and residents of Tamale.
