Alhaji Mohammed Mununi in accordance with regulations made by the Electoral Commission under article 51 of the 1992 constitution of the Republic of Ghana was elected as a representative of the Northern Region to serve as a member of the Council of State.
The Council of State is a body of prominent citizens analogous to the council of elders in the traditional political system, which advises the President on national issues.
The Council of State which was established by Articles 89 to 92 of the 1992 constitution states that, βthere shall be a Council of State to counsel the President in the performance of his functionsβ.
In accordance to this, the Electoral Commission of Ghana conducted elections to elect members of the Council of State concurrently across the 16 regions in Ghana on Tuesday, 11 February, 2025, to give practical meaning to Articles 89 to 92 of the 1992 constitution.

The Council of State elections for the Northern Region took place at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council in Tamale, where Four personalities filed to contest for the position.
The contestants were; Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, Richard Andani Yakubu, Nyande Abdul Raqib and Adam Hussein.
Alhaji Mohammed Mununi pulled 26 votes out of 32 total votes(81.25% of total votes) to beat the contenders, Richard Andani Yakubu who had 4 votes(12.5% of total votes), followed by Nyande Abdul Raqib with 2 votes(6.25% of total votes) and Adam Hussein with zero.
The Northern Regional Director of Electoral Commission, Mr. Lucas Yiryil declared Alhaji Mohammed Mununi as a member of the Council of State elect for Northern Region.
It’s worth noting that Alhaji Mohammed Mununi has had a distinguished career in public service, including serving as a Member of Parliament, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, and President of the Ghana Bar Association (Northern Region Branch).
Alhaji Mumuni has expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the delegates and the people of the Northern Region for the trust they’ve placed in him to serve as a member of the Council of State, and promised to discharge his responsibilities in accordance with the 1992 constitution. This is a significant honor, and Alhaji Mumuni’s appreciation is a testament to his commitment to serving the region.

Ali John Adolf, the Northern Regional Minister, represented the President of Ghana at the election center and congratulated Alhaji Mohammed Mununi on his election as a member of the Council of State. He emphasized the significance of the advisory role that Alhaji Mununi will play, urging him to provide wise and informed counsel to the President.
