The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, on Friday, 10 April, 2026 officially handed over the site and cut sod for the construction of a 24-hour Economy Market at Wulensi in the Nanumba South District, marking a significant step towards boosting economic activity in the area.
The project, which is being undertaken on behalf of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, forms part of governmentโ€™s broader agenda to promote a 24-hour economy aimed at enhancing productivity, creating jobs, and stimulating inclusive growth across the country.
The ceremony, which brought together traditional authorities, local government officials, and residents, followed a welcome address by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Nanumba South, Hon. Musah Abdul Rashid, who expressed appreciation to government for prioritising the district in its development agenda.
In his address, Hon. Ali Adolf John underscored the importance of the project, describing it as a transformative initiative that would unlock economic opportunities for traders, farmers, artisans, and small-scale entrepreneurs in the district and beyond.
He noted that the 24-hour Economy Market initiative was not merely about constructing physical infrastructure, but about creating a platform for continuous economic activity, reducing post-harvest losses, and improving livelihoods.
โ€œThis project is about empowering our people to do more, earn more, and live better. It is about creating an enabling environment where businesses can thrive at all hours,โ€ he stated.
The Minister indicated that Wulensiโ€™s strategic location within the Nanumba South District makes it a suitable hub for commercial activities, adding that the market would significantly enhance trade and attract investment into the area.
He reaffirmed governmentโ€™s commitment to equitable development across all regions, stressing that no part of the country would be left behind in the implementation of key national programmes.
Hon. Ali Adolf John further assured the gathering that the government would closely monitor the project to ensure its timely completion and adherence to quality standards. He also urged the contractor to execute the work diligently and within schedule.
The Minister called on the chiefs and people of Wulensi to support the project by cooperating with the contractors and safeguarding the facility upon completion.
โ€œDevelopment is a shared responsibility. I urge all of you to take ownership of this project and ensure that it succeeds for the benefit of present and future generations,โ€ he added.
He also encouraged the youth to position themselves to take advantage of the economic opportunities that the market would create, particularly in areas such as trading, agro-processing, transportation, and other allied services.
On his part, the DCE, Hon. Musah Abdul Rashid, reaffirmed the Assemblyโ€™s commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the project and expressed optimism that the market would significantly improve the economic fortunes of the district.
The sod-cutting ceremony symbolises the official commencement of construction works, with expectations high among residents that the project will serve as a catalyst for growth and development in the Nanumba South District.
