The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, on Thursday, 16 July 2026, led a high-powered delegation to the Gbewa Palace in Yendi to sign the Book of Condolence in honour of the late Overlord of Dagbon, Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II, as part of activities marking the third day of the royal funeral rites.
The Regional Minister was accompanied by members of the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), as well as officials of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC), in a solemn demonstration of solidarity and respect for the revered traditional ruler and the entire Dagbon Kingdom.
Upon arrival at the Gbewa Palace, the delegation was warmly received by elders, traditional authorities, and members of the Dagbon Traditional Council before proceeding to sign the Book of Condolence. The atmosphere was one of deep grief and reflection as mourners from across the country continued to converge at the palace to pay their respects to the late monarch, whose reign was widely admired for promoting peace, unity, cultural preservation, and development within the Kingdom.
In his condolence message, Hon. Ali Adolf John expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the late Yaa-Naa, describing him as a visionary and unifying traditional leader whose wisdom, humility, and commitment to the progress of Dagbon earned him admiration beyond the Northern Region.
The Minister noted that the demise of the Overlord is not only a great loss to the people of Dagbon but also to Ghana as a whole, considering the invaluable role he played in strengthening traditional governance, promoting peaceful coexistence, and supporting national development initiatives.
He further conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Government of Ghana, President John Dramani Mahama, the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, and the people of the Northern Region to the bereaved royal family, the Dagbon Traditional Council, and all sons and daughters of Dagbon.
Hon. Ali Adolf John prayed for strength, comfort, and divine guidance for the royal family and the entire Kingdom during this period of mourning, while expressing confidence that the rich traditions, unity, and resilience of Dagbon would continue to endure.
The Minister also reaffirmed government’s commitment to maintaining peace and security throughout the funeral period, commending the security agencies for their professionalism and dedication in ensuring that the traditional rites continue in a peaceful and orderly atmosphere.
Members of the delegation equally signed the Book of Condolence and observed the customary funeral protocols, joining thousands of mourners in paying tribute to the departed King.
The visit underscored the strong collaboration between government and traditional authorities in promoting peace, stability, and development in the Northern Region. It also reflected the profound respect the Government of Ghana continues to accord the institution of chieftaincy as a vital pillar of the nation’s governance and cultural heritage.
As the funeral rites continue, dignitaries from across the country are expected to visit the Gbewa Palace to honour the memory of the late Yaa-Naa Abukari II, whose enduring legacy of peace, unity, and selfless service will remain deeply etched in the history of Dagbon and Ghana.
