The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, has expressed profound grief over the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Ndan Yaa Naa Abubakari II, describing the revered monarch as a towering symbol of peace, wisdom, unity and cultural pride whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of Ghanaians.
The announcement of the passing of the revered King was officially made on Monday, July 13, 2026 by Naa-yab Kugnaa, throwing the entire Dagbon Kingdom, the Northern Region and the nation into a period of deep mourning.
In a solemn message following the announcement, Hon. Ali Adolf John, on behalf of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the Government of Ghana, the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC), and the people of the Northern Region, extended heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the Dagbon Traditional Council, the chiefs, elders and people of Dagbon over the immense loss.
The Minister noted that the demise of the Yaa Naa transcends the boundaries of the Dagbon Kingdom, describing it as a national tragedy because of the late King’s invaluable contributions to peacebuilding, national unity, cultural preservation and socio-economic development.

According to Hon. Ali Adolf John, Ndan Yaa Naa Abubakari II dedicated his reign to strengthening the revered institution of chieftaincy while promoting reconciliation, dialogue and peaceful coexistence among his people. He said the late monarch’s wise leadership, humility and unwavering commitment to justice earned him admiration and respect across Ghana and beyond.
He further stated that the late Yaa Naa consistently provided wise counsel on matters affecting national peace and security and remained a strong advocate for development initiatives that improved the welfare of the people of Dagbon and the Northern Region.
The Regional Minister described the late monarch as a father to all, whose reign reflected selfless leadership, dignity and a deep commitment to safeguarding the rich customs and traditions of the Dagbon Kingdom.
While mourning the passing of the revered King, Hon. Ali Adolf John called on the sons and daughters of Dagbon to remain calm, united and law-abiding throughout the period of mourning. He urged the public to respect the customs, traditions and established succession processes of the Dagbon Kingdom, emphasizing that peace remains the greatest tribute that can be paid to the late Yaa Naa.
He assured the public that the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), in collaboration with the Dagbon Traditional Council and other relevant stakeholders, would continue to work tirelessly to ensure the maintenance of peace, security and public order throughout the mourning period.
The Minister appealed to residents to cooperate fully with the security agencies and adhere to all directives issued by the traditional authorities to guarantee a peaceful and dignified observance of the funeral rites.
Hon. Ali Adolf John concluded by praying for Almighty Allah to grant the late Ndan Yaa Naa Abubakari II eternal rest in Jannatul Firdaus, forgive his shortcomings, and grant strength, comfort and wisdom to the Royal Family, the chiefs and the entire people of Dagbon during this difficult period.
He stressed that although Dagbon has lost a distinguished King, the enduring legacy of Ndan Yaa Naa Abubakari II’s exemplary leadership, commitment to unity and dedication to the progress of his people will forever remain an integral part of Ghana’s history and the cherished heritage of the Dagbon Kingdom.
