The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has officially handed over 128 vehicles to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in a major intervention aimed at strengthening local governance, enhancing project monitoring and improving public service delivery across the country.
The handover ceremony, held on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the Institute of Local Government Studies in Madina, Accra, forms part of efforts to enhance the operational capacity of local government institutions and equip them with the logistical resources required to execute their mandates effectively.

The provision of the vehicles is expected to improve the mobility of MMDCEs and Assembly officials, facilitate regular monitoring of development projects, strengthen supervision at the local level and enable Assemblies to respond more efficiently to the needs and concerns of their respective communities.
Addressing the gathering, Hon. Mahama Ayariga underscored the importance of responsible stewardship in the management of public assets, cautioning MMDCEs against using the vehicles for personal business, family events or other private engagements unrelated to their official responsibilities.
He specifically warned against the misuse of the vehicles for personal errands, including visiting partners and travelling to private farms, stressing that the vehicles were procured with public resources and must, therefore, be used exclusively for their intended official purposes.

The Minister emphasised that MMDCEs represent the face of government at the local level and must conduct themselves in ways that reflect integrity, discipline and accountability. He reminded them that citizens closely observe the conduct of public officials and expect them to demonstrate the highest standards of responsibility in the management of state resources.
Hon. Ayariga further urged the leadership of the Assemblies to institute strict maintenance regimes to preserve the vehicles and ensure their long-term usability. He also stressed the need for responsible driving practices and transparent accountability mechanisms to safeguard the fleet against misuse, neglect and unnecessary expenditure.
He noted that the sustainability of the intervention would depend largely on the commitment of the beneficiaries to protect the vehicles, adhere to established administrative procedures and ensure that the resources deliver tangible benefits to the people they are intended to serve.
As part of broader efforts to strengthen grassroots governance, the Minister announced that motorcycles would soon be provided to Assembly Members to facilitate their work within their respective electoral areas.
The proposed provision of motorcycles is expected to enhance the mobility of Assembly Members, improve their engagement with constituents and enable them to identify, report and follow up on development challenges more promptly. It is also intended to strengthen the link between local representatives and the communities they serve.
Speaking on behalf of his fellow MMDCEs, the Mayor of Tamale, Hon. Abubakari Adam Takoro, expressed profound appreciation to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama for the intervention, describing it as an important demonstration of the government’s commitment to strengthening local governance and improving the operational capacity of the Assemblies.
Hon. Takoro acknowledged that the provision of the vehicles would enhance the ability of MMDCEs and their respective Assemblies to discharge their responsibilities, particularly in the areas of project monitoring, administrative supervision, community engagement and the coordination of development activities.
He assured the Minister that the MMDAs remained committed to ensuring that the vehicles were deployed strictly for their intended purposes, properly maintained and managed responsibly to preserve their value and guarantee their long-term contribution to local development.
The Tamale Mayor further emphasised that the Assemblies recognised the importance of protecting public investments and would work towards ensuring that the vehicles served the collective interests of the communities rather than individual or private interests.
He reiterated his sincere gratitude to President Mahama for his continued commitment to strengthening local governance and equipping MMDAs with the logistical support necessary to deliver on their statutory mandates.
Hon. Takoro also acknowledged the significance of providing local government institutions with the necessary resources to translate development policies and programmes into practical outcomes that directly improve the lives of citizens.
The handover of the 128 vehicles represents an important step towards improving the operational efficiency of local government administration. With enhanced mobility, MMDCEs and Assembly officials are expected to undertake more frequent field visits, monitor ongoing projects more effectively and strengthen oversight of development initiatives within their jurisdictions.
Beyond improving transportation, the intervention highlights the importance of equipping local authorities with the resources required to promote responsive governance, strengthen institutional accountability and accelerate development at the grassroots level.
As the vehicles are deployed across the beneficiary Assemblies, the expectation is that they will contribute meaningfully to more effective local administration, improved monitoring of development projects and enhanced public service delivery.
