The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, has officially received and distributed 650 laptops to eleven Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Northern Region under the governmentβs flagship One Million Coders Programme.
The presentation, which took place at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC) on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, forms part of a nationwide initiative spearheaded by the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications, an agency under the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation.The programme, championed by President John Dramani Mahama, seeks to equip one million Ghanaians with cutting-edge digital skills to thrive in the modern digital economy.

Receiving the laptops on behalf of the region, Hon. Ali Adolf John described the initiative as a transformative intervention aimed at bridging the digital divide and empowering citizens, particularly the youth, with relevant technological competencies. He noted that access to digital tools remains a critical component in enhancing education, governance, entrepreneurship and service delivery.
βThis initiative is not just about the distribution of laptops; it is about unlocking opportunities and preparing our people for the future of work,β the Minister stated. He commended the government and GIFEC for their continued investment in digital infrastructure and human capital development across the country.

The Regional Manager of GIFEC, Mr. Abdul Fatawu Salifu, explained that the laptops were procured by the government through the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation as part of efforts to transform Ghanaβs digital future. He emphasized that the intervention is designed to strengthen digital literacy at the local level and support capacity-building initiatives within the assemblies.
Mr. Salifu further encouraged young people across the region to actively take advantage of the programme by engaging with GIFEC district coordinators for guidance on registration. He also urged interested participants to visit the official One Million Coders online portal and follow the registration procedures to enroll and benefit from the initiative.
He further outlined the distribution of the laptops, indicating that Tamale Metropolitan Assembly(Tamale Central and South constituencies) received 100 and Sagnarigu Municipality(Sagnarigu and Tamale North constituencies) received 100 laptops, Tamale Innovation Centre received 100 while Nanumba North Municipality, Nanumba South District, Kumbungu district, Yendi Municipality, Saboba district, Nanton district, and Mion district each received 50 laptops.
Following the presentation, the Regional Minister formally handed over the laptops to the various MMDCEs, urging them to ensure effective utilization and proper maintenance of the devices to maximize their impact.
On behalf of the beneficiary assemblies, the Municipal Chief Executive for Nanumba North Municipality, Hon. Abdul Somed Hamza, expressed profound gratitude to the government for the timely intervention. He assured that the assemblies would fully support the implementation of the programme and ensure that the laptops are used for their intended purpose.
The One Million Coders Programme is expected to play a pivotal role in equipping Ghanaians with digital skills, fostering innovation, and enhancing socio-economic development, particularly in underserved communities.
The event marks another significant milestone in governmentβs efforts to promote digital inclusion and position Ghana as a competitive player in the global digital economy.
