At the inauguration of the World Shea Expo 2024, Northern Regional Minister Hon. Shani Alhassan Shaibu called for collaborative efforts to promote inclusive and environmentally responsible growth in the shea industry. The event, organized by Savannah Golden Tree Ltd. in collaboration with the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC), took place on May 29, 2024, at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale.

Hon. Shaibu highlighted the shea industry’s significant economic potential, noting its expanding demand in cosmetics, personal care, and confectionery sectors. “The shea industry represents a vital economic prospect for nations like ours,” he remarked. He emphasized the industry’s deep cultural and economic roots in West Africa, describing it as a source of sustenance and stability for generations.

Addressing environmental concerns, Hon. Shaibu stressed the importance of conservation efforts and responsible harvesting practices to protect shea trees from deforestation. “We must commit to conservation to ensure the sustainability of this resource,” he urged. He also called for fair pricing to ensure equitable compensation for shea producers and appealed to investors and development partners to support the industry’s growth.
Second Lady Hajia Samira Bawumia, in a keynote address delivered by Hon. Mariam Iddrisu, praised the Expo’s role in empowering women in rural communities and promoting sustainable practices. She highlighted the shea industry’s contribution to Ghana’s economy, with an annual export volume exceeding 70,000 tons, valued at over $112.6 million. Despite challenges such as tree population depletion, she noted the rising global demand for shea butter presents opportunities for economic growth and job creation.

Chief Adam Tampuli, Executive Director of Savannah Golden Tree Ltd., underscored the Expo’s role in empowering women and youth in the shea industry. He emphasized its significance in raising awareness about international markets, boosting foreign exchange earnings, and promoting sustainable development. “Our vision is a thriving shea-nut sector that leads in entrepreneurship, investment, and poverty alleviation,” he stated.
