The Northern Regional Coordinating Council held its expanded meeting on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at the Residency Round Pavilion in Tamale.
The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Shani Alhassan Shaibu in his keynote address, highlighted crucial regional issues during the meeting. The discussion covered peace and security, health, water, sanitation and hygiene, substance abuse, and various development programmes and projects.

𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆
The minister emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and security in the region, especially as the 2024 General Election approaches. He commended the security agencies for their commitment and professionalism.
𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
The minister reported on the government’s initiatives to improve education, including the Free Senior High School Programme, building of schools, teacher training, and technology integration. The Northern Region topped the country with a 98% transition rate from JHS to SHS under the Free Senior High School Policy.
𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝘆𝗴𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗲 (𝗪𝗔𝗦𝗛)
Hon. Shaibu highlighted the progress made in the WASH sector, with 1,825 communities declared Open Defecation Free (ODF), representing 66.05% coverage. He also commended UNICEF and development partners for their support.

On the part of health, the minister emphasized the importance of strengthening the healthcare system to deliver quality and affordable services. He reported on the induction of new nurses, the donation of a 60-bed mobile field hospital by the US Government, and the progress made in expanding access to healthcare facilities.
𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀
The minister reported on the progress made in implementing development projects, including the Social Cohesion Project (SOCO), which has completed 48 out of 58 sub-projects. He also mentioned the Ghana Secondary Cities programme, which has commissioned the Jisonayili Market.
The minister concluded by expressing his gratitude to the stakeholders, development partners, and staff for their contributions to the region’s development. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to achieve the region’s goals and build a thriving and inclusive society.
The council meeting underscored the Northern Region’s commitment to addressing key challenges and fostering sustainable development.
