The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, has issued a strong call for the protection and respect of firefighters, describing any attack on them as a direct threat to public safety and national security.
Delivering an address at the 2026 International Firefightersโ Day celebration held on Monday, 4 May, 2026 at the Ghana National Fire Service Headquarters in Nyohini, the Minister commended officers of the Service in the Northern Region for their unwavering dedication and sacrifices in safeguarding lives and property.

The event brought together key stakeholders, including the Regional Fire Commander, heads of security agencies, traditional authorities, development partners, and members of the public to honour the bravery and commitment of firefighters.
Hon. Ali Adolf John described the occasion as a moment of reflection and appreciation for firefighters who routinely risk their lives in the line of duty. He paid tribute to fallen heroes who lost their lives while serving the nation, urging that their sacrifices should never be forgotten.
The Regional Fire Commander, ACFOL. Koranteng Y. Joseph, in his opening remarks, noted that International Firefightersโ Day (IFFD), observed annually on May 4, is dedicated to honouring the bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment of firefighters across the globe. He explained that the day also provides an opportunity to remember and pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty while safeguarding lives, property, and the environment.

He further indicated that the commemoration was instituted in 1999 following a tragic wildfire incident in Australia that claimed the lives of five firefighters. Since then, it has evolved into a global observance, marked by ceremonies, parades, community engagement activities, and fire safety awareness campaigns.
ACFOL. Koranteng Y. Joseph concluded his remarks by leading a minute of silence in honour of the fallen heroes of the fire service.
Addressing this yearโs theme, โAn Attack on Firefighters and Equipment is an Attack on Public Safety: End Assaults and Protect the Firefighter,โ the Minister emphasized its urgency and relevance. He warned that hostility toward firefighters undermines community safety and weakens emergency response systems.
โFire knows no boundaries and shows no favouritism,โ he stated, noting that it can devastate livelihoods and claim lives without warning. He expressed concern over increasing incidents where firefighters face verbal abuse and physical attacks while responding to emergencies, describing such acts as unacceptable and unlawful.

The Minister stressed that obstructing firefighters, whether by blocking access routes, delaying response times, or interfering at fire scenes often leads to avoidable casualties and destruction. โIn emergencies, every second counts,โ he noted, adding that protecting firefighters and their equipment is essential to preserving lives and property.
Hon. Ali Adolf John further highlighted the demanding nature of firefighting, which requires courage, discipline, and resilience in hazardous conditions. He acknowledged the vital role firefighters play not only in combating fires but also in responding to road accidents, floods, and rescue operations.
Reaffirming governmentโs commitment under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama, the Minister disclosed ongoing efforts to strengthen fire safety infrastructure across the region. He indicated that rapid urbanization, expanding markets, and increasing industrial activities have heightened fire risks, necessitating improved logistics and modern equipment for the Service.

He assured that the Regional Coordinating Council would continue to collaborate with the Ghana National Fire Service and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to address logistical challenges, including the provision of additional fire tenders, operational hydrants, and reliable water supply systems.
The Minister also underscored the importance of proper urban planning and public cooperation, noting that narrow roads, inaccessible routes, and lack of water sources often hinder firefighting efforts.
He called on the media and the general public to support intensified fire safety education and awareness campaigns, stressing that fire prevention is a shared responsibility. According to him, many fire outbreaks can be avoided through simple safety practices such as proper electrical maintenance and the use of fire extinguishers in homes and workplaces.
Hon. Ali Adolf John urged citizens to foster a culture of safety by cooperating fully with firefighters during emergencies and treating them as heroes rather than obstacles.
He commended the Northern Command of the Fire Service for successfully organizing the event and reaffirmed his unwavering support for firefighters across the region.
Concluding his address, the Minister appealed to the public to embrace the theme of the celebration and reject all forms of violence against firefighters.
โAny assault on a firefighter is a direct threat to the safety of our society. Together, we must end such acts and build a stronger, safer Northern Region,โ he stated.
The celebration ended with renewed commitments from stakeholders to enhance collaboration, improve fire safety systems, and promote respect for emergency responders across the region. See less
