Hon. Shani Alhassan Shaibu, the Northern Regional Minister, extended gratitude on behalf of the region’s chiefs and inhabitants for the government’s decision to select the Northern Region as the venue for this year’s Green Ghana event.
The Green Ghana Project, a pioneering forestry initiative by the Ghanaian government under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in collaboration with the Forestry Commission, aims to combat climate change and its associated impacts on global warming.
A delegation representing the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Forestry Commission, led by Mr. Sulemana Nyadia Nelson on behalf of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, formally apprised the Northern Regional Minister of the forthcoming 2024 edition of the Green Ghana Celebration.
Mr. Nyadia disclosed that the 2024 Green Ghana Celebration, scheduled for April 16th, 2024, at the University for Development Studies in Tamale, aims to plant in excess of 10 million trees nationwide. This announcement was made during a courtesy visit to the Northern Regional Minister to discuss preparations for the event.
Expressing concern over the escalating rates of deforestation and bushfires exacerbating climate change in the region, Hon. Shaibu emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing these challenges.
Drawing from the success of previous national events held in Tamale, Hon. Shaibu pledged unwavering support to ensure the seamless execution of the 2024 Green Ghana Celebration.
He urged both the residents of the region and citizens across the nation to actively participate in tree planting initiatives, underlining the critical role of afforestation in mitigating climate change.
