The Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC), in collaboration with the Forestry Commission, will on Friday, 5 June 2026, organize a regional tree-planting exercise as part of activities marking the Government of Ghana’s 2026 Tree for Life Initiative.
The event will be led by the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, who will undertake the ceremonial planting of trees at the premises of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council in Tamale. The exercise forms part of a nationwide campaign aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, restoring degraded landscapes, and encouraging citizens to actively participate in safeguarding the country’s natural resources.
The Tree for Life Initiative underscores the Government’s commitment to environmental protection, climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development. It also seeks to instill a culture of tree planting and environmental stewardship among citizens while contributing to efforts to increase Ghana’s forest cover and improve ecological resilience.
As part of this year’s campaign, residents of the Northern Region are being encouraged to plant at least one tree in their homes, schools, farms, workplaces, institutions, and communities. The Regional Minister has called on traditional authorities, religious leaders, educational institutions, civil society organizations, youth groups, development partners, and the general public to participate actively in the exercise and support efforts aimed at creating a greener and healthier environment.
To facilitate widespread participation, the Forestry Commission has made available a variety of quality tree seedlings for free distribution. Members of the public can obtain seedlings from the Forestry Commission’s Regional Office in Tamale as well as Forestry Commission offices across all districts in the Northern Region.
The Northern Regional Coordinating Council and the Forestry Commission emphasize that tree planting remains one of the most effective strategies for combating climate change, preventing soil erosion, improving air quality, protecting water bodies, and enhancing biodiversity. Citizens are therefore encouraged not only to plant trees but also to nurture and protect them to ensure their survival and long-term environmental benefits.
The Regional Minister noted that environmental conservation is a shared responsibility and called on all residents to contribute meaningfully to the success of the initiative. He stressed that collective action today will help secure a sustainable and resilient environment for future generations.
The ceremonial exercise at the NRCC is expected to bring together government officials, heads of departments and agencies, traditional leaders, security services, students, environmental advocates, and members of the public in a united effort to promote environmental sustainability and sustainable development in the Northern Region.
The public is therefore invited to participate fully in the 2026 Tree for Life Initiative by planting and nurturing at least one tree as a personal contribution towards building a greener, healthier, and more climate-resilient Ghana.
