The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, has successfully led efforts to secure a landmark partnership between the Northern Regional Coordinating Council and Trentino Ambiens, an Italian waste management company, for the establishment of a modern waste treatment plant in Savelugu aimed at transforming sanitation and renewable energy generation across the Northern Region.
Hon. Ali Adolf John’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability and improved waste management has been central to the advancement of the project, which is expected to serve several Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), including Savelugu, Nanton, Kumbungu, Karaga, and parts of Tamale.

The initiative was originally proposed by the Savelugu Municipal Assembly, led by the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Alhassan Fuseini, through a formal request submitted to Trentino Ambiens in Italy for support towards the establishment of a waste treatment facility. However, the project gained significant momentum following the keen interest shown by Hon. Ali Adolf John, who recognized its potential to address sanitation challenges while promoting sustainable energy production in the region.
As part of the process, the Savelugu Municipal Assembly passed a resolution during a General Assembly meeting approving the acquisition of the waste treatment plant. Hon. Ali Adolf John subsequently provided strategic guidance and support to ensure that the initiative received the necessary attention and stakeholder commitment required for its realization.

Under the leadership of Hon. Ali Adolf John, several engagements were held between Ghanaian authorities and officials of Trentino Ambiens to discuss technical, operational, and investment considerations surrounding the project. These discussions strengthened the relationship between both parties and laid the foundation for a formal partnership.
Recognizing the importance of firsthand engagement, Hon. Ali Adolf John led a high-level delegation to Italy following an invitation from Trentino Ambiens for further consultations and negotiations. The visit formed part of efforts to deepen collaboration and finalize arrangements for the implementation of the project.
The delegation, led by the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, included the Municipal Chief Executive for Savelugu, Hon. Alhassan Fuseini, the Savelugu Municipal Coordinating Director, the Municipal Director of Planning, the District Chief Executive for Nanton, Hon. Abdul Rahman Zenabu Rosina, and the Nanton District Coordinating Director. The delegation held extensive discussions with officials of Trentino Ambiens on the technical, operational, and environmental benefits of the proposed waste treatment facility.
A major highlight of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ghanaian delegation and Trentino Ambiens. The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, signed the agreement on behalf of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council and the participating local authorities. In addition, the Municipal Chief Executive for Savelugu, Hon. Alhassan Fuseini, and the District Chief Executive for Nanton, Hon. Abdul Rahman Zenabu Rosina, also signed the MoU on behalf of their respective assemblies, demonstrating the commitment of both districts to the successful implementation of the project.
Speaking on the significance of the project, Hon. Ali Adolf John emphasized that the waste treatment plant aligns with the government’s broader agenda of promoting environmental sustainability, improving public health, and creating economic opportunities through innovative solutions. He noted that the facility would help address growing waste management concerns while converting waste into valuable resources such as gas and electricity.
According to Hon. Ali Adolf John, waste generated within Savelugu, Nanton, Kumbungu, Karaga, and parts of Tamale will be collected and processed at the facility. The resulting energy products are expected to contribute to local development efforts while reducing environmental pollution and enhancing sanitation standards across the beneficiary districts.
Hon. Ali Adolf John further disclosed that a technical team from Trentino Ambiens is expected to visit Savelugu in July 2026 to inspect the proposed project site and undertake the necessary assessments required for the commencement of construction. The visit is anticipated to pave the way for the implementation phase of the project.
The Northern Regional Minister expressed confidence that the project will become one of the most impactful environmental infrastructure investments in the region. He noted that beyond improving sanitation, the facility will create employment opportunities, support local economic growth, and strengthen efforts to promote renewable energy solutions.
Through his leadership and active involvement, Hon. Ali Adolf John has positioned the Northern Region to benefit from an innovative waste management system that promises long-term environmental, social, and economic benefits. Stakeholders remain optimistic that the project will serve as a model for sustainable waste management and clean energy generation in Ghana, while significantly improving sanitation across participating MMDAs.
