On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, the Global Dreams Hotel in Tamale played host to the 6th Annual Nursing and Midwifery Leaders and Managers Conference. The event brought together dedicated professionals who are at the forefront of Ghana’s healthcare system, embodying the spirit of commitment, compassion, and excellence.
In his welcome address, Hon. Ali Adolf John, the Northern Regional Minister extended a heartfelt welcome to the participants. Although he couldn’t attend the event in person, his welcome address was delivered by Mr. Damma Mumuni, Director of Administration at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council(NRCC). He expressed delight that the conference was being hosted in the Northern Region for the first time, allowing participants to experience the rich culture, hospitality, and warmth of the region.
The theme of the conference, “Addressing Public Health Emergency Outbreaks: The Role of Nursing and Midwifery Leaders and Managers,” is particularly timely, given the evolving health challenges and unforeseen emergencies that the world is facing. Hon. John highlighted the pivotal role of nursing and midwifery leadership in safeguarding the health and well-being of communities, citing the recurrent meningitis outbreaks, cholera outbreaks, and the recent detection of mpox (monkeypox) as examples of the challenges that healthcare professionals face.

The conference provides a vital platform for nursing and midwifery leaders and managers to share experiences, learn from best practices, and forge stronger networks. The discussions will shape policies, improve protocols, and ultimately save lives. Hon. John emphasized the need to strengthen surveillance and early warning systems, enhance training and capacity building for rapid response teams, and prioritize the mental and physical well-being of healthcare professionals.
The Northern Regional Minister acknowledged the tireless efforts of nursing and midwifery leaders and managers, who navigate complex health landscapes with unwavering dedication. He assured the participants of his commitment to working with them to implement actionable insights that will emerge from the deliberations.

The conference will culminate in the Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards, which celebrate the dedication and sacrifices of professionals who have distinguished themselves in service. Hon. John pledged his full support to the awardees from the Northern Region, noting that their achievements shine a light on the immense potential within the region.
The conference is a testament to the commitment of nursing and midwifery leaders and managers to building resilient health systems that protect the most vulnerable and promote Universal Health Coverage. As the event unfolds, it is expected to inspire renewed commitment and collective action towards achieving this goal.
